BACK TO BASICS - TRADITIONAL TEACHINGS

COURSE CURRICULUM

Safety Awareness-

Students will be instructed and will complete the WHIMIS, OSHA, Food safe, and CPR


Safety Training-

Students will be instructed on the safe use of knives, Bows and Arrows, traps and guns. Strict safety measures will be in place and all students must adhere to the guidelines

Tools-

All gear will be supplied by the Traditional Learning Center to ensure the safe use of all tools. It is expected that students will treat each other and their tools with respect.

Equipment-

All students in all programs will have the choice to live off the land during their stay. This will include building live willow huts to live in and learn how to make tools using what is found in Mother Nature.
Students will have the opportunity to hunt and fish and bring the harvested animals back to the commercial kitchen to learn how to process and preserve the harvest. This will include canning the meat and fish, making sausage and jerky, smoking the meat and preserving meat using salt.
Students will have the opportunity to learn from healers how to create, recognize and harvest native plants in order to produce medicinal healing medicines.
Students will learn how to build a sweat lodge and able to participate in sweat lodge ceremonies. Other ceremonies include: Sunrise Ceremonies, Full Moon Ceremonies, Smudging Ceremonies.
Students may have an opportunity to build a tipi
All Programs will work together in building a walipini (underground greenhouse operating year round) to provide the harvesting of fruits and vegetables to encourage food security and sustainability.
