You will learn to apply Occupational Health and safety regulations. You will be able to identify and describe personal protective equipment, fall equipment, working environment hazards and industrial health hazards.
Tools
You will learn how to select and properly use a wide variety of hand tools, portable power tools and stationary tools and equipment. You will learn how to use the basic tools of measurement and study the basic math operations involving whole numbers, common and decimal fractions, percentages and ratios and proportions. You will also perform length, area and volume calculations.
Building Materials
You will learn to identify different types of wood and non wood products used in the construction industry as well as various types of mechanical and non mechanical fasteners and anchors.
Foundations
You will learn how to construct and install framework for footings, grade beams, slabs-on-grade. Various types of concrete formwork will be covered as well as procedures for installing reinforcing materials, miscellaneous inserts, and anchor bolts.
Floor Framing
You will learn to assemble various types of floor systems as well as procedures for installing floor sheathing. You will learn basic principles required for deck construction.
Wall Framing
You will learn to construct wood frame walls and ceiling joists. Installing, strapping, blocking and furring is also covered.
Roof Trusses
You will learn to lay out, assemble, erect and brace engineered roof trusses.
Essential Job Skills
You will develop and practise essential job skills by practising effective interpersonal communication skills for the workplace.
Projects
You will apply the skills and knowledge acquired to construct projects. Hands on experience will help you acquire skills in using common tools of the trade. You will receive hands-on carpentry experience using the construction projects. You will be exposed to actual on the job construction activities.
